Our Post
VFW Post 5352 was chartered on January 7, 1946, and is made up of combat veterans who served in the United States Armed Forces, including the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard.
As a fraternal organization, our members value the camaraderie shared among fellow veterans while continuing to serve our community.
Our members volunteer their time, labor and expertise to provide a wide range of services that support active-duty military members, veterans and their families throughout our community.
VFW Post 5352 continues a tradition of fellowship, service and support for veterans, military families and the Kernersville community.
About Captain Oscar L. Joyner Jr.
Oscar L. Joyner Jr., the son of Dr. and Mrs. O. L. Joyner of Kernersville, was born on January 8, 1919. He graduated from Kernersville High School in 1936 and later attended Davidson College, where he participated in the ROTC program.
After graduating from Davidson College in 1940, Joyner joined the United States Army and served with the U.S. 4th Infantry Division.
In 1942, Captain Joyner was one of 18 officers, representing 18 divisions, selected for intensive Commando training in the British Isles.
Upon returning to the United States, he directed Ranger training for his division and wrote the manual used for that training.
Captain Joyner deployed overseas in January 1944. On June 6, 1944, he was among the first waves of troops to land on Utah Beach during the D-Day invasion of Normandy.
Soon afterward, he was appointed a battalion commander. Captain Joyner was killed in action on June 22, 1944, when his Jeep was ambushed during hedgerow fighting on the front lines.
He is buried in France.
