The VFW Auxiliary brings together family members of eligible veterans who share a commitment to serving veterans, service members, their families and our communities.
If you have a qualifying relationship to a veteran who is or was eligible for membership in the Veterans of Foreign Wars, you may be eligible to join the VFW Auxiliary.
Who Can Join the VFW Auxiliary?
To be eligible for VFW Auxiliary membership, you must be at least 16 years old and have an eligible family relationship to a person who is or was eligible for membership in the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States.
Eligible Family Relationships
Step- and adopted family members are included. Step- and adopted parents, children, siblings, grandparents and grandchildren are considered the same as biological family members for Auxiliary eligibility. Half-siblings are also eligible relationships.
What Makes Your Veteran Eligible?
The veteran through whom you are qualifying must be or have been eligible for membership in the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Generally, VFW eligibility requires qualifying military service that includes at least one of the following:
- Campaign or Expeditionary Medal
Receipt of a VFW-recognized campaign or service medal for qualifying overseas service. - Hostile Fire Pay or Imminent Danger Pay
Receipt of Hostile Fire Pay (HFP) or Imminent Danger Pay (IDP), commonly verified through military pay records or a Leave and Earnings Statement. - Service in Korea
Service in Korea for at least 30 consecutive days or 60 non-consecutive days.
What Documentation Will I Need?
Applicants are responsible for providing documentation that establishes the qualifying veteran's service and eligibility.
The most common document used is the veteran's DD-214, which may show dates of service, locations and campaign medals.
Other military records may also be used, including records documenting qualifying Korea service or Hostile Fire / Imminent Danger Pay.
If you do not have the veteran's service records, military service records may be requested through the National Archives and Records Administration.
